Position Overview:

The Assistant Dean for Human Resources (HR) and Administration will serve as a strategic partner to the dean, and work in collaboration with the SA+P leadership team (DLC Heads and senior administrators), colleagues across the School and Institute, and MIT administration.  Will serve as the senior administrative leader in all aspects of human resources for SA+P.  Will have broad and comprehensive responsibility for overseeing SA+P HR and academic affairs administration.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

The Assistant Dean will serve as a strategic partner to the dean and work in collaboration with colleagues on the SA+P leadership team, colleagues from across the Institute, and MIT administration.  Will have broad responsibility for overseeing SA+P administrative operations, special projects and priorities, including human resources, administration and management, and academic affairs.  Partners with the SA+P Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, Belonging & Student Support, and collaborates with other members of the leadership team on the School’s most pressing issues and strategic priorities.  The Assistant Dean will be a skilled relationship builder who is attuned to the nuances of a complex academic and research organization.  We seek an individual who is open, collaborative, able to build and maintain strong relationships, and able to inspire others. Serve as a trusted advisor and consultant to the dean, department heads, and administrative managers across SA+P on strategic staffing plans, compensation, training and development, and employee relations.

Mentor, coach, develop, and engage with SA+P staff and faculty in an effort to promote a common understanding and appreciation for SA+P’s mission.

Ensure HR practices, correspondence, and procedures in the School comply with Institute policies, legal requirements, and other governing agency regulations.

Promote and advance a culture of inclusion, working with the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, Belonging & Student Support.

Partner with the dean and Faculty Diversity Committee on matters of diversity and faculty development in support of effective faculty hiring, promotion, retention, and engagement.

Oversee faculty promotion and tenure process, working closely with the School’s HR & Faculty Affairs Administrator.  Attend School Council meetings to serve as a resource on MIT policy, and on faculty promotion and tenure guidelines.

Manage Dean’s Office operations in consultation and coordination with senior Dean’s Office staff.

Manage all salary reviews for staff and faculty across the School.  Serve on Institute committees representing the interests of SA+P and its DLCs.  May undertake special projects at the request of the dean.

Supervision Received:

Minimal supervision is received from the Dean of SA+P.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervises HR & Faculty Affairs Administrator

Qualifications & Skills:

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

B.A./B.S. and 10 years of high-level administrative experience in a university and proven success in overseeing human resources.  An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.  Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a wide variety of responsibilities in multiple functional areas in a fast-paced, dynamic organization.  Effective interpersonal communication skills and diplomacy, required.  Excellent active listening, written and verbal communication skills.  Strong organizational skills and must be able to prioritize multiple and often competing demands under deadline pressure.  Working knowledge of the operations of complex research universities or research organizations.  Ability to synthesize information from multiple sources and provide succinct and actionable briefing materials and action plans.  Must be detail oriented, but be able to view larger policy concerns.  Capacity to innovate and solve complex problems.  The ability to think independently and creatively to help initiate new policies and procedures are essential, along with the ability to implement new or interpret existing policies or procedures.  Must be resilient, with the strength and fortitude to make difficult decisions and empower and support others to do the same; compassionate and sensitive to the needs and well being of others.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High-level experience in academic affairs and human resources in a higher education setting.  Law degree helpful.  MIT experience preferred.
