"There were 39 winning projects in AN‘s 2026 Best of Design Awards. Out of all these winners, the jury chose one that stood out from the rest."

The MIT Metropolitan Warehouse has been named 2026 Project of the Year in The Architect’s Newspaper’s Best of Design Awards.

Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R), the adaptive reuse of the historic storage warehouse into the new home of MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning received the top distinction among 39 winning projects.

The jury recognized the project for its creative approach to reusing an existing structure and preserving materials with significant embodied carbon. The MET Warehouse was also named the winner in the Adaptive Reuse—Education category.

First opened in 1894 and completed in 1923, the former storage facility has been transformed into a contemporary hub for collaboration and creative work, with studios, classrooms, offices, galleries, and shared spaces. The renovation preserves the building’s historic character while introducing new ways to bring light and air into the structure.

The MET Warehouse opened as the new home of the School of Architecture and Planning in 2026.
